8 Hour Overnight Layover

Next week I will have a layover in Abu Dhabi. It's 8 hours and overnight. I'm wanting to rent a car and drive around, as I'm also a photographer. I have a few questions before I do this though because it's my first time in the Middle East.

Is it safe to be alone at night around Abu Dhabi? Will I get arrested for taking pictures? Do I have to register with the police? What is open overnight (I'm not worried about shipping)? Any restaurants or interesting places?
