It is comprised of seven provinces known as ‘Emirates’ and each one has their own royal lineage and a Ruler. All the emirates has almost complete autonomy. While other things like the currency, military, telecom, foreign policy, postal system, laws, etc. are common. One of the Kings (Known as Emir) is elected as the president and other as Vise president by the council of Emirs from all seven. This makes matters of administration easier.

The seven Emirates are. Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Umm Al-Quwain.

Seven Emirates, I think the best similar case would be the federal republics, like USA, where States have big authonomy. In UAE each emirate has its own kind of authonomy (Sharjah prohibits alcohol completly for example ). It seems also police is independent as it always shows in the cars “Dubai police” or “Abu Dhabi police” in the cars. Eventhought, the UAE is ONE country just. Differently than USA, each emirate has its own Sheik, and , as a convention, the president is the Sheik of Abu Dhabi and the vice president, the Sheik of Dubai.

The United Arab Emirates is one country.

It comprises 7 states, known as Emirates.

These 7 Emirates are Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah & Fujairah
