Finding a car in Dubai - is it always such a struggle?

My husband and I moved to Dubai 2 months ago. When we first arrived we really wanted a car - mainly out of convenience. It is easy to just jump into your car and drive somewhere, where waiting 5 to 10 minutes for a cab (especially on Fridays) can be quite a hurdle.

We have looked into monthly rentals but they are expensive! They seem to start at AED 1300 a month (whaaaat). Yes, the cars are new, but we just need a car that works and that can get us places.

Because of all the articles about fines and cars breaking down, expensive garage costs and scams on car websites, we feel it is unsafe to buy a car from, let's say, Dubizzle or Dubicars. What is your experience with buying a car via one of those websites? Especially when your budget doesn't stretch above (let's say) AED 15.000 (in the UK you would get an OK car for that price)

Where did you buy your car and how did you get about doing so? Maybe you are renting? How much do you pay? I just want to get some first hand information to help us make a choice because we feel that having a car in Dubai and not constantly relying on random taxi drivers will help us explore and experience the UAE vastly better.
